Sciatica nerve, which is known as Sciatica Disease among the people, is a painful disease seen in the nerve called “sciatica“, which originates between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae and extends from here to the heels.
The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It exits from the lumbar part of the spinal cord and runs down the legs. The term sciatica is used to describe the pain that can occur along the nerve when it is irritated. This irritation is usually caused by slipped discs at the exit of the sciatic nerve or joint inflammation along the path of the nerve.
Sciatica pain manifests itself in two ways. It is either a constant mild pain or an occasional severe pain. The pain travels along the sciatic nerve from the hip to the heel. Sciatica pain is sometimes confused with a herniated disc. The patient is placed on his/her back to determine whether the pain is caused by the sciatic nerve. While the leg is tense, it is slowly slid upwards. In the meantime, if a muscular pain extending from the thigh to the back leg and even to the fat is felt, the suspicion of sciatica is confirmed. The higher the leg is lifted, the more severe the pain.
